Religious Ruling on Organ Donation

The stance of Islamic Sharia and Fiqh Councils regarding organ donation

"وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا"

Surah Al-Ma'idah: 32

Jordanian Council of Logic and Iftaa Ruling

The Council of Iftaa and Islamic Research and Studies in Jordan has issued rulings permitting organ donation according to specific Sharia regulations, considering it an act of ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), benevolence towards others, and saving a protected human soul.

  • The donation must be voluntary and without financial compensation.
  • Medical verification of death (in cases of brain death) by a specialized and neutral medical committee.
  • Consent of the donor before death (will) or consent of the heirs after death (and in the absence of heirs, the right transfers to the Guardian/Wali al-Amr).

International Fiqh Councils

The International Islamic Fiqh Academy of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Council of Senior Scholars, and most Fatwa houses in the Islamic world have agreed on the permissibility of organ donation under conditions that ensure human dignity and prevent organ trafficking.
